Dear Untamed Youth,

Pursue what you’re passionate about, and the rest will fall into place.

For me, I am passionate about the human body: how it functions on a physiological level, how it can be healed, and its physical capabilities. In my life, I have found various ways to interact with this passion of mine and ultimately build towards a career in which I can continue to study and apply what I love.

First, my fascination with health guided me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Science at UC Berkeley. I have always been interested in nutrition and fitness and I wanted to expand my knowledge on a metabolic level. I originally entered college as a MCB major, the classic “pre-health” major I felt pressured to be. However, after 3 semesters, I could no longer deny my passion for nutrition and made the switch. I am now studying what I truly love, while still being able to fit in my grad school requirements. If you find yourself in the same position - torn between abiding by social constructs or pursuing your passion -  I urge you to follow your heart and choose the latter.

Additionally, I work as an Emergency Medical Technician at ProTransport-1 to better understand the pathology and how to treat human illness and injury. I am exposed to a variety of complications every day, which has given me insight into the complexity of our bodies. Although long hours, difficult scenarios, and stress have been hurdles in my work, there is no feeling comparable to bringing comfort to someone who is scared, hurt, and/or alone. Being an EMT has taught me so much compassion and each day on the job makes me more excited to continue my journey in healthcare.

Finally, I have maintained dance as a hobby throughout college. I am now executive director of Thrive Dance Company, a contemporary dance group that has given me everlasting friendships and a “safe haven” on campus.  It has allowed me to explore how our bodies can be vehicles of art and expression, while simultaneously providing me elation and relief.  As I continue to learn more about the human body and the incredible things it is capable of, I am constantly inspired and fulfilled. I cannot wait to continue my path to become a Physician Assistant, where I can use my knowledge to better the lives of others.
