Dear Untamed Youth,

Yeshe Surya Elmore

surfer / horsewoman

I’ve been passionate about surfing, riding horses, and adventuring with my family since before I ever popped into this world!  My mom is an avid outdoorswoman and was always out adventuring and having fun in nature while she was pregnant with me.  Running, climbing, mountain biking, surfing, and yoga have, and always will be, deeply embedded in my soul.  I’ve always loved playing in the outdoors and feel such a deep connection with nature.  My heart is the most at peace when enjoying the never-ending playground that mother nature has to offer!

Surfing, in particular, has been an incredible gift and deeply rooted passion in my life. My parents started pushing me into waves when I was just a little grom on the island of Kauai, and that sensation of connection with the untamed power of the ocean continues to feed my soul each time I paddle out! It makes me feel unexplainable, but the best way I can describe it is that I feel this inner aliveness and welling up of joy.   That giddy feeling of the unknown when a big set comes rolling in and you just have to face it, right then at the moment, just you and this power; maybe you get slammed and held down…maybe you glide right under…ha!  For me, the thrill of bigger waves is just so epic, and I love the feeling when I push against my comfort zone as I try to open myself to more challenging situations.  The ocean always has something to teach me, from life lessons, challenges, and love to the many amazing friendships and laughs that have come into my life through surfing.  I think most of my closest friends are surfers, and it’s such a beautiful way to meet and share the stoke with new people. My greatest gift is that my two siblings love surfing as well and are my absolute best friends.  I’m so, so grateful to share the same passions with them and we’re always trying to find some kind of adventure and fun to get into!

Horseback riding feels similar to surfing in a way to me, the peace and joy it gives me is much the same.  I remember when my sister and I were little girls we would race our two horses across the meadow where I grew up in a full gallop- bareback, a halter, and the stoke of that wind in my face.  Being barefoot and carefree, connecting with such powerful and spiritual animals brings me an amazing sense of awe and inspiration and always gives me the feeling of “I’m home”.

I’m so grateful to be able to do these things, and that my parents raised me the way they did, we like to call it wild schooling, with the natural world and life experiences being some of the biggest teachers.  Having nature as such a big part of my life is so important to me, whenever the surf is flat, we’re out under the oaks riding our horses or just striving to be outside as much as we can, nature is one amazing teacher and I’m constantly in awe of her. As of now, I’m just continuing to do what makes me feel most alive and happy! I love competitive surfing and I’m looking forward to seeing where that takes me! The ocean and the many wild places on this planet have my heart and I’m forever grateful for them!
